Zoom: Clips

Zoom Clips - end to end experience

Zoom Clips

IMPACT: Led product architecture, design and content strategy. Defined the MVP and Product vision - which led to a fully staffed team and a fully GA'ed product. Read what Wired wrote about Clips!

Introduction

Zoom is a video conferencing platform, allowing users to connect online for video conference meetings, webinars and live chat. As hybrid work has increasingly become the standard in a post-pandemic world, Zoom decided to increase their portfolio of collaborative tools

Problem

  • While Zoom Meetings allows for Cloud recording, there was not an easy way to record easily shareable Clips - meant for asynchronous communication

Goal: To create a feature which allows for quick video sharing and screen-recording - outside a meeting

My Role

  • Led design effort as the only designer - with the first 3 months as the only team member
  • Define design needs for MVP, and post-MVP
  • Defined where the product would live across the Zoom platform

UX Summary

Starting off - I needed to break down the user experience into a more digestible format:

User Personas

Our core user persona was for the knowledge worker (think of someone within the tech industry) who wants to share information asynchronously.

Use Cases

While working on Clips, there was an existential question on why Clips? More specifically - what is the difference between a Clip and a Cloud Recording (this is the recording of a meeting).

1. Missed meeting

Recordings: entry point inside a meeting

  • Assumption that users will use to record multiple participant meetings
  • Assumption that these recordings will be meant for “missed” event, rather than a form of communication. Meant as a form of spectating event.
  • Assumption users will use video

2. Async meeting

Async video: entry point of a recorder outside of meeting

  • Assumption that users will use smaller clips for messaging communication
  • Assumption users will want additional integrations (chat, email, etc)
  • Assumption users will usually use screen share & video

3. Knowledge share

Broad knowledge sharing: entry point outside of meeting

  • Assumption that this is a recorded event meant for spectating
  • Assumption meant for sharing broadly
  • Assumption users will usually use screen share & video

Feedback

Internally we tested this feature. Feedback came back in the form of a chat channel. Overall the feedback was quite positive

  • OMG I LOVE CLIPS
  • Hi team - just used clips for the first time. Love it! I use this all the time. I used to do it with Loom…
  • Wow - very impressed with this first version of Clips, great work everyone.

Constructive criticism

While the overall user experience was positive, there were requests on some improvements

  • Sharing was defaulted to private - this was not intuitive as the Clip would be shared and could not be viewed unless permission settings were changed
  • Due to technical requirements - video settings were split between the Meeting's video settings and the Clips video settings. This caused some confusion to users, especially around background noise suppression
  • Other users requested more customization with the Clips (including uploading their own thumbnails, & etc)

Media Reception

Take a look at what the media has written about it!
